Belts transmit drive from the crankshaft pulley to the alternator, water pump, cooling fan, air compressor and other accessories. This group covers V-belts and multi-rib belts, automatic and manual tensioners, idler and jockey pulleys, and the mounting brackets that carry them. Belt condition drives the reliability of everything downstream: a slipping belt undercharges the battery and reduces coolant circulation, and a failed belt can stop water pump drive entirely. Automatic tensioners wear internally and lose their damping long before they look worn, so tensioners and idlers are normally renewed alongside the belt rather than reused.

Follow the manufacturer's service interval and inspect at each service for cracking, glazing, fraying or missing ribs. Belts in high-temperature or high-hour applications wear faster.
It is good practice. Automatic tensioners lose spring tension and damping with age, and a worn tensioner will shorten the life of a new belt.
Insufficient tension, a worn or seized idler, pulley misalignment, or oil and coolant contamination on the belt face are the usual causes.
