Pumps circulate the fluids an engine depends on, and a decline in any of them shows up quickly elsewhere — bearings starved of oil, or a cylinder head running without coolant. This group covers lubricating oil pumps, jacket water and circuit pumps, pre-lubrication pumps, and the transfer pumps used in the lubrication and cooling circuits. Continuous-duty gas engines commonly use large oil sumps with automatic top-up systems, since oil consumption over an 80,000 hour service interval is substantial and manual topping up would be impractical. Pre-lubrication pumps are also common, priming the bearings before cranking so the engine never starts on a dry bearing surface.
