Bearings and bushings carry rotating and sliding loads throughout the engine and its driven equipment. This group covers main and big-end shells, camshaft bearings, thrust washers, small-end and rocker bushings, and the rolling element bearings used in pumps, alternators, fans and transmissions. Plain bearings rely on a pressurised oil film to keep surfaces apart, so almost all premature failures trace back to lubrication — low oil pressure, contaminated oil, or extended intervals. Rolling element bearings more often fail from contamination ingress past a worn seal, or from misalignment and side loading. Inspecting a failed bearing usually reveals the cause before the replacement goes in.

Standard shells suit an unmachined journal. Undersize shells are thicker, compensating for a journal that has been reground to a smaller diameter, and must match the machining size exactly.
Many press-fit bushings close up slightly on installation and need reaming or honing to the specified running clearance. Check the manufacturer's fitted dimension before assembly.
