Belts transmit drive from the crankshaft to the alternator, water pump, cooling fan and other accessories, so belt condition determines the reliability of everything downstream. This group covers v-belts and multi-rib belts, tensioners, idler and jockey pulleys, fan drives, and mounting brackets. On machine-mounted engines the belt drives both the cooling fan and the alternator, so a slipping or failed belt produces overheating and a charging fault at the same time. Working environments heavy with dust and debris shorten belt life, and contamination on the belt face from oil or coolant is a common cause of slipping that replacing the belt alone will not resolve.
