The cylinder head seals the top of the combustion chamber and houses the valve train that controls gas exchange, working under the highest thermal and mechanical loads in the engine. This group covers complete heads and bare castings, inlet and exhaust valves, guides and seats, springs, collets and caps, stem seals, rocker arms and shafts, pushrods, lifters and camshafts. CAT's larger platforms use individual cylinder heads, which allows a single cylinder to be attended to without disturbing the rest of the engine and makes head replacement a more contained job than on a one-piece head. Cracking between valve seats and around injector bores is the common finding on high-hour heads, along with seat recession on engines running heavy load cycles.
AMS Parts supplies a wide range of cylinder head & valves components for CAT engines used in power generation, marine, and industrial applications. Browse the full range below, or contact us for specific requirements.
The 3500 series, C175 and other large-bore platforms use one head per cylinder. Smaller C-series engines generally use a single head casting across the bank.
Some cracks can be addressed by a specialist, but cracks through a valve seat bridge or into a water jacket usually mean replacement. Pressure testing establishes whether a head is serviceable.
Follow the interval in the CAT service schedule for the engine and duty cycle. Clearances should also be checked after any work that disturbs the valve train.
