The crankshaft converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotation and carries that power to the flywheel and driven equipment, supported along its length by bearings that depend on a pressurised oil film. This group covers cAT crankshafts, main and connecting rod bearings, thrust washers, connecting rods, flywheels and ring gears, vibration dampers, and the timing gear train. CAT publishes regrind limits and undersize bearing grades for most engine families, so a worn crankshaft is frequently machined and returned to service rather than replaced. Bearing condition is the usual limiting factor: sustained running at high load in generator and marine duty, combined with oil contamination or low pressure, produces shell wear that shows first as falling oil pressure at operating temperature.
AMS Parts supplies a wide range of crankshaft & gears components for CAT engines used in power generation, marine, and industrial applications. Browse the full range below, or contact us for specific requirements.
In most cases yes. CAT specifies undersize dimensions and matching bearing grades for its engine families, provided the shaft is crack-free and within the published regrind limits.
Shells are supplied in standard and undersize grades. Measure the journal after any machining and order the grade that matches, since fitting the wrong grade sets an incorrect clearance.
Visible distortion, fluid leakage from a viscous damper, or a shifted index mark all indicate failure. A failed damper transmits torsional vibration into the crankshaft and can lead to fatigue cracking.
